The lsass.exe is a file which processes security policies in Windows, dubbed LSASS (Local Security Authentication Server), this process verifies users who are logging in to Windows based system by checking if the credentials are valid or not.

In this article we will be dealing with and solve the Entry Point Not Found Error, if you have received an error message similar to Object Not Found, please follow this link for a detailed solution.

Important: The lsass.exe process is necessary for safe and stable running of your computer, do not terminate this process.

Lsass.exe Entry Point Not Found Error

When you boot up a Windows computer system, you may receive error messages similar to the following:

Lsass.exe: Entry Point Not Found

The procedure entry point _resetstkoflw could not be located in the dynamic link library Msvcrt.dll.

- Or -

Services.exe: Entry Point Not Found

The procedure entry point _resetstkoflw could not be located in the dynamic link library Msvcrt.dll.

When you click OK; your keyboard may become non-responsive and you are unable to click anything.

Cause of this Error

This problem will occur if the file msvcrt.dll is replaced by a third party version that does not have the function _resetstkoflw.

How to fix lsass.exe Entry Point Not Found Error

To successfully fix this error you will need to replace the current msvcrt.dll with the original by means of the Windows Recovery Console.

Complete the following steps to repair this issue:

Insert the Windows XP CD into your computer’s CD drive and restart your computer from the CD-ROM.

Press R at the welcome screen to start the Recovery Console.

Press the number key that represents the Windows Operating System (if you have only one operating system installed, press 1) that you want to repair, and then press Enter.

If prompted, enter the administrator password and then press Enter to proceed further.

Next, type the following commands and press Enter after each command:

cd system32

ren msvcrt.dll msvcrt.old

CD-ROM_or_DVD-ROM_Drive_Letter:

cd \i386

expand msvcrt.dl_ BootDriveLetter:\windows\system32

exit

Note:

The BootDriveLetter refers to the drive letter of your boot drive, this means the drive in which Windows is installed and boots from; this commonly the C drive.

The CD-ROM_ and _DVD-ROM_Drive_Letter refers to the drive letters of your CD or DVD ROM Drive letter, commonly these are named D, if you have two hard drives or hard drive partitions, it is probably called E.

Security and Malware Issues

While the lsass.exe file is a safe process, malware developers will often devise Trojans that take the name of perfectly safe processes to avoid detection.

Additionally, they can assume similar names, such as Isass.exe (<- Capital i), so that when you check your processes in the task manager it may be hard to tell the difference and poor antivirus applications often fail to detect the threat.

Getting Rid of Malware

To ensure your computer is not affected with malware it is important to always keep your virus protection applications updated with the latest definition, once updated; perform a deep scan of your computer and follow the steps to remove any threats discovered.

For additional protection, you should get a good anti-spyware application, such as SpywareCease.

Unless you current malware protection application is a full blown Internet Security Suite, there is a good chance you are affected with spyware, these unwanted intruders track your habits, bombard you with useless ads, severely slows down performance and could open the door to more malicious attacks.

You can use this free scan to determine if your computer is compromised with spyware.

If you have find a process on your computer under the name system32.exe it is a Trojan and should be disabled immediately, and you should take necessary steps to remove this file from your computer.

You can check if this process is running on your computer by clicking Ctrl+Alt+Del to bring up the task bar and go to the processes tab, if you find the system32.exe process your computer is infected.

To remove it is recommended you update and run your antivirus application and use it forcefully remove the Trojan.

If your antivirus is unable to detect it you can attempt to remove it manually.

How to Manually Remove System32.exe

Bring up the Task Manager by clicking Ctrl+Alt+Del, go to the Processes tab and look for the process system32.exe, highlight and click End process to disable this process.

Next you will need to delete the actual file so browse to C:\Windows\System32 and look for the file system32.exe in this folder, it may also be hiding in C:\Windows or a subfolder of C:\Program Files.

When you find it simply delete it, if the file cannot be deleted it is locked and you will need to use an antivirus application to remove it.

Cleaning up the Leftover Registry Files

System32.exe writes to the registry to be able to run every time you start Windows, and after you have deleted the executable for the Trojan the registry entries it created will attempt to run system32.exe every time you start Windows, thus prompting an error message.

To get rid of these corrupted entries you should run a registry cleaner and have it remove the entries automatically.

Tip: Download Registry Easy and automatically remove registry errors.

Lsass.exe is a core Windows file that handles authentication processes in Windows. This is achieved by using an authentication package such as msgina.dll, once the user is authenticated, lsass.exe generates a token that allows the user to log on and remain logged in.

This article solves the Object Not Found error, if you are experiencing an error message similar to Entry Point Not Found, you can follow this link for a solution.

Note: Lsass.exe is a critical file needed for stable running of Windows, do not terminate this process.

Detecting Lsass.exe Object Not Found Error

After the Log On dialogue box disappears, you receive the following error message:
“lsass.exe - System Error Object Name not found.”

Cause of this Error

You will commonly encounter this error if one or several services that run in the lsass.exe process or in the Services.exe are not configured to run as a shared service process. By default, any services that run in the above processes are configured to run as shared service processes.

How to repair this error

If you are unable to log on to Windows after the problem first occurred, press the F8 key when the operating system selection page is displayed or before the computer starts Windows. Select the Last Known Good Configuration option.

If this does not resolve the issue, complete the following steps to log on to the computer and run Sc.exe.

Restart the computer.

Press the F8 key before the Windows logo page is displayed.

Press the F8 key to select Advanced Startup Options when the operating system selection page is displayed.

Use the arrow keys to select Safe Mode with Command Prompt, and then press ENTER.

You can use the Sc.exe tool to determine what service is incorrectly configured.

Complete the following steps to achieve this:

Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and press ENTER.

Type the following commands. Press ENTER after you type each command:

Sc query HTTPFilter

Sc query KDC

Sc query Netlogon

Sc query NTLMssp

Sc query PolicyAgent

Sc query ProtectedStorage

Sc query SamSs

Sc query Eventlog

Sc query PlugPlay

The TYPE value must be 20 WIN32_SHARE_PROCESS for the services to be correctly configured. This is the value which configures the services to run in shared service processes.

For example, if you type SC query Netlogon, you receive output that is similar to the following:

C:\>sc query Netlogon

SERVICE_NAME: Netlogon

TYPE : 20 WIN32_SHARE_PROCESS
STATE : 4 RUNNING
(STOPPABLE,PAUSABLE,IGNORES_SHUTDOWN)
WIN32_EXIT_CODE : 0 (0×0)
SERVICE_EXIT_CODE : 0 (0×0)
CHECKPOINT : 0×0
WAIT_HINT : 0×0

Note: Services that are configured to run in separate memory processes have a TYPE value of 10 WIN32_OWN_PROCESS.

Once you have determined which services is incorrectly configured, change the TYPE value using the following steps:

Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and press ENTER.

Type sc config Service Name type= share, and then press ENTER.

Repeat step 1 for each that is incorrectly configured.

Note: In this step, Service Name refers to the service/services that incorrectly configured you found using the Sc.exe tool in the previous step.

Malware Issues

Because lsass.exe is a core Windows file, it is often targeted by malware developers, who will either infect the file with a virus or develop a virus that will assume the same, or a similar name as lsass.exe to avoid detection.

You should always keep your antivirus updated with the latest definitions and run regular scans to keep your computer from malware and unwanted files.

For added security, you should download SpywareCease in order to keep you safe from spyware and adware, which can dramatically decrease performance, bombard you with ads and open the door for more malicious attacks.

SpywareCease offers a free scan you can use to determine if any spyware has compromised your computer.

Registry Issues

The registry is a place that Windows use to store all operational settings on your computer; basically, every change made to your computer is stored in a huge database. But over time this database can become filled with invalid information which can corrupt processes and cause various system errors.

For the best protection against such errors, the best solution is to use Registry Easy, you can get a free scan and scan your computer for any errors and then automatically repair them using Reggenies powerful features.

Iexplore.exe is the executable that runs Internet Explorer web browser from Microsoft. Basically, it allows users to connect to the internet and read web pages.

How to fix iexplore.exe errors

When you run Internet Explorer, it may suddenly stop responding or shut down and you are presented with the following error message:

"Iexplore.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

Error Description

This error is commonly caused by one of the following Browser Helper Objects (BHO):

Buyers Port

Morpheus

Morpheus Shopping Port

WURLD Shopping Community

Additional, being logged on to Windows using a limited user account, the BHO’s will attempt to modify registry entries and system files. Because the user account has limited rights, the BHO’s is unable to access these files and will cause Internet Explorer to stop responding and crash.

Solution

The best way to resolve this issue is to remove these BHO’s from your computer, if you are not sure which one is causing the error you should remove them one by, or just remove all of them altogether.

Deceptive Malware Infections

Sometimes malware can infect your computer and hide by taking the names of other healthy processes, iexplore.exe being very famous because just about any Windows user has this file, so it can easily avoid detection by using the same or a similar name.

An early warning sign is if you notice a high CPU usage by the iexplore.exe process when you check the Task Manager.

First of all, click Ctrl+Alt+Del together to bring up the Task Manager, navigate to the Processes tab and look for the process iexplore.exe, if you see more than one instance running, or it is there even if Internet Explorer is not running, there is a good chance you have been infected with malware.

Additionally, if you right click and click Open File Location, this will take you to where the iexplore.exe file is located; by default it should be located in the following folder.

C:\program files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe

If it is located in a different location, it can be safe to assume you have a malware infection.

Nobody wants malware on their computers because they will mostly have very bad intentions, so you should download the latest definitions for your antivirus and run a full system scan to identify and remove the threat, for further protection you should also have a good anti-spyware application, like SpywareCease installed.

Having good malware protection does not always guarantee you will be safe from infections. Exercise caution when surfing the internet and avoid dodgy sites and untrusted download sites.

Additionally, you should download Registry Easy and perform regular registry scans, this software will keep your computer in top shape by deleting unneeded and corrupted system files, remove system errors and help increase overall system performance.

What is svchost.exe?

The svchost.exe (short for Service Host) is a generic host for running Dynamic Link Library (DLL) files; these files can be defined as a type of mini program and are often shared by several applications to perform similar tasks in order to save disk space and processing power.

Although this is very useful, it is not possible to launch a DLL file from Windows, and they can only be launched by another executable (EXE) file, so Microsoft created svchost.exe to handle processes that are executed from DLL’s.

Because svchost.exe handles several service requests, there can be multiple instances running at the same time, it is important to never terminate this process because it is necessary to have a secure and stable system.

How to Fix svchost EXE Application Errors

The first thing you need to do when you are experiencing an svchost.exe error is to check your computer for any malware infections, if the test comes back clean there are some problems with your system files that you can try to resolve manually.

If you are not very tech-savvy or just don’t have the time to be dissecting your computer and fixing things manually it is recommend you download Registry Easy and scan your computer for any svchost.exe related errors.

If you do want to fix this manually, I have compiled a tutorial you can use to fix your svchost.exe error.

This article is designed to help you get a better understanding of how EXE files and malware work together to infect your computer, and will also offer you some help to identify and resolve some common problems related to EXE errors and malware.

What is Malware?

Malware is one of the biggest threats against Windows users today, and recent studies show that more than 80% of home computers are infected with some form of malware.

While most internet users feel they are protected when they have an antivirus application on their computers, malware programs are getting increasingly difficult to detect and new malware are hitting the internet almost daily, spyware and adware being the most common.

The biggest concerns with spyware and adware is that they are very hard to detect and are often installed unknowingly by the users, by either third party bundled software or hidden inside freeware applications.

How does Malware Affect EXE Files?

Malware will often attempt to install an EXE file on your computer, or modify existing ones, because this type of file can run code on your computer and perform certain tasks.

Once installed, these malicious programs will begin to damage parts of your computer by executing numerous harmful actions:

Modifying and/or deleting existing files

They will often take the names of safe EXE files to hide themselves better

Changing registry entries to prevent certain programs from running, or to allow it to be “revived” after it has been removed

Some programs, like spyware will look for personal information stored on your computer and track your internet habits.

Listed below are some of the common warning signs your computer has become infected with malware:

Start up becomes very slow and overall performance decrease dramatically

There are several unknown processes running on your computer, or several processes with the same name can be found in the task manager

Your firewall and antivirus is turned off (some malware will disable them to prevent detection)

Programs and files are missing or corrupted, and new ones have been added that you have never seen before

You experience unexpected and strange error messages

Your programs freeze, forcing you to hard boot your computer

Avoiding is the Best Protection

There are certain precautions you can take to prevent being infected with malware, like being careful with what sites you visit and not downloading anything from sources you don’t know or trust.

You should also have a good internet security and antivirus application installed, frequently updated and running on your computer to be able to detect malware infections early before they have the chance to cause irreversible damage.

You should also be cautious about downloading freeware as they are often bundled with spyware and adware, which are installed as third party applications, free download sites with cracked and pirated software are also a major security issue that should be avoided.

How to Remove and Repair

If you are unfortunate enough to have been infected with malware, you should use your antivirus to perform a deep scan of your computer to be able to detect and remove the threat.

You should also check if your current antivirus application is a full internet security suite, if not, you should download SpywareCease to detect potential spyware and adware threats.

It is also recommended to run a good registry cleaner once the threat has been removed to clean up any registry files it may have left behind and to repair damaged system files.

Sometimes, these malicious applications will write commands to the registry that will reinstall the malware every time you start Windows, even if you have removed the threat. By using a registry cleaner, you can scan your registry and remove these harmful commands. Try Registry Easy, the scan is free and can save you hours of troubleshooting.

What are Drivers?

Drivers are files on your computer that allows the Windows Operating System and installed applications to interact and communicate with connected hardware. They can be regarded as instruction manuals the software parts of a computer uses to understand how to operate hardware devices.

If you experience a problem with a driver, the hardware it is designed to operate will not function properly or at all.

Troubleshooting and Solutions

Your computer will have many drivers installed on the system, and all of them could cause an error at any time, so here are some of the common problems and how to resolve them:

The hardware device is not properly connected

This is surprisingly common, so it should be the first thing you check, see to that the device is properly connected and turned on.

The driver is incompatible with other applications on your computer

Sometimes when you install a device or a program, they are not compatible with each other and cause system errors; you can try to remove the device or program from your computer.

An example could be if your CD-ROM driver is not compatible with your CD-Burning software, you will either need to get a different CD-Burning program or look for a compatible driver.

The driver has become damaged, corrupted or outdated

This can occur if you have installed an incompatible update or the driver has become damaged due to other internal errors.

To deal with this problem, you can enter the Device Manager by typing “devmgmt.msc” into run…, and press enter. Once inside, you will see a list of installed hardware devices, when you expand the categories (click the + signs) to see the drivers, you can right click them and get three choices:

Update Driver: This option will launch an update wizard that will attempt to locate and install the appropriate driver updates.

Rollback Driver: If you experienced and error shortly after updating a driver, the updated version is probably not compatible, you can use this option to return to the previous version.

Uninstall Driver: This option uninstalls the driver entirely, sometimes removing the driver and reinstalling it can fix errors.

Other Solutions

To save time, you could go for a third party driver update tool, Driver Checker is an excellent choice and will scan your computer for any driver related issues, such as corrupted or outdated drivers and automatically install the updates for these drivers.

Keeping you drivers updated is a very important step to having an optimized computer, and you should check for driver updates regularly, but going through the device manager and manually looking for updates can be time consuming so getting an automatic driver update tool is great way to save time and ensure you always have the latest drivers for you hardware devices.

What is an EXE File?

EXE is short for executable, and can be identified by their .exe extension behind the file name. These files contain the information required by Windows to be able to run a certain program, to put it simple; an EXE file is a program.

What are EXE Errors?

When you have an EXE error you will be unable to run the program the EXE file launches, this is commonly indicated by an error message, but early warning sign can be noted when programs stop responding, or freezes up and crashes.

What causes EXE Errors?

EXE errors can be caused by wide variety of reasons, but the 3 most common are listed below.

Malware Issues

Many EXE errors are caused by malicious programs, which infect EXE files or modify registry entries to change the file associations of programs so the EXE file is unable to run properly.

Driver Issues

If there are any hardware/software compatibility issues, this may spark an EXE error, your system could also become affected if you have any out of date or damaged drivers.

Registry Issues

The registry is a location Windows stores all operational files and system references in order to operate properly, but over time, the registry can become full of invalid and harmful files that cause internal system errors.

How to Fix EXE Errors

You can reduce your computers vulnerability to EXE errors by always having good antivirus and spyware solutions running on your computer. You should also exercise caution when browsing the internet and avoid dodgy sites.

Another way to detect and repair EXE errors is to use a good registry cleaner to scan your computer for EXE and other system related errors, Registry Easy is our top recommendation and offers a free scan you can use determine if your computer have any errors.
